It is debatable whether Paul was actually killed or just stoned. The word translated “supposing” (KJV) or “thinking” (NIV) is nomizo, which means “to hold by custom or usage, to deem, think, suppose” (Thayer). A study of its 15 occurrences in the New Testament will clearly show that one cannot conclude from this word whether Paul was actually dead or not, only that the townspeople thought he was. In any case, whether Paul was unconscious or dead, the text does indicate a speedy and miraculous recovery. Conybeare and Howson comment: “The natural inference from the narrative is that the recovery was miraculous; and it is evident that such a recovery must have produced a strong effect on the minds of the Christians who witnessed it.” [W.J. Conybeare and J.S. Howson, The Life and Epistles of St. Paul (Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., Grand Rapids MI), page 155.] Close 3. Let Us Praise (Spirit & Truth audio teaching tape, Nov/Dec 1993). Close
